We should be doing all we can to encourage young people to engage in voting and democracy - this starts by ending the postcode lottery of voting in the UK.
Sign our petition to call on the next government to lower the voting age to 16.
Millions of young people are employed at 16, paying taxes and spending money that benefits the economy. Now is the time to give them a democratic voice and to cement manifesto commitments to Votes at 16.
The idea that young people will not or do not want to vote is outdated. A recent NUS survey found 87% of respondents intended to vote in the next General Election. Research has shown when given the right to vote 16-17 year olds have previously voted greater numbers than those aged 18-24 (75% voting) and 97% saying they would vote in future elections.
Scotland and Wales have led the way in giving 16 year olds the vote, it is time for Northern Ireland and Westminster to follow.
