On Wednesday 20th May Translink revealed proposals to cut some public transport services and removing fare discounts in an effort to save £10 million. The plans could affect Metro, Ulsterbus, and NI Railways services across Northern Ireland, according to the company’s chief executive speaking at Stormont.
If this proposal goes ahead we know this will have a detrimental impact on students all across Northern Ireland affecting:
1) Student Safety
2) Ability to access campus , placement and work
3) Cost of living
Public transport is essential for students getting to college, work, placement and daily life. Students are already at breaking point, they cannot absorb another obstacle put in their way. Cutting routes and reducing services will only create more barriers for students and further isolate young people who are already under enormous pressure.
The Department for Infrastructure needs to step in, or else risk reducing access to education itself.
